Pancasila Assignment/Tugas Pancasila HI IC UMY 2009

Pancasila is the official philosophical foundation of the Republic of Indonesia. Pancasila consists of two Sanskrit words, "panca" meaning five, and "sila" meaning principles. It comprises five principles held to be inseparable and interrelated:
  1. Belief in the one and Only God, (in Bahasa, Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa).
  2. Just and civilized humanity, (in bahasa, Kemanusiaan Yang Adil dan Beradab).
  3. The unity of Indonesia, (in bahasa, Persatuan Indonesia).
  4. Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives, and (in bahasa, Kerakyatan Yang Dipimpin oleh Hikmat Kebijaksanaan, Dalam Permusyawaratan Perwakilan, dan)
  5. Social justice for the whole of the people of Indonesia (in bahasa, Keadilan Sosial bagi seluruh Rakyat Indonesia)

Pancasila as Ideology and Identity of the Republic of Indonesia

There is no nation without principle and even there is no society without common interest and purpose to pursue the common goals. Islamic nations will have Islam as the ideology and identity, USA and most of European countries have democracy, the communist countries have communist ideology, and Indonesia has Pancasila as ideology. Although Pancasila now is not well accepted in many Indonesia citizens because it is contrary to their belief, especially Islam, but Indonesia is still clinging on it as the bases of Indonesian constitutions.

Pancasila as the ideology

- Open Ideology meaning that Pancasila is available to be translated into various translations and interpretations. It gives many possibilities for Indonesia to act according to their interpretations and understanding. And now we see there are so many rules and regulations made by the parliament and president. It allows the changes to be done by the authority as long as it doesn’t violate the five principles. It also gives a lot of space for people to choose their own way of life and ideology so that Pancasila is not the only source of ideology and way of life for the Indonesians. At this rate, it doesn’t weaken Indonesia, but it makes the nation stronger. Because the people can gain more freedom and rights.

- Close Ideology meaning that there are certain parts of Pancasila which can not be changed or compromise, such as; freedom in faith, freedom to live, human rights, and freedom in speech. Those parts are fundamental and can not be compromised by any Indonesians, because they belong to Close Ideology section. Indonesians have to obey the commandments as the very basic fundamental ideology.

Pancasila as the identity

Pancasila as the identity of Indonesian state forces all Indonesians to act and behave accordingly to Pancasila and Indonesian commandments, because of the belief in Pancasila as national identity. So every Indonesian must know Pancasila to understand how to live as Indonesians every where, whether in Indonesia or in foreign country. For example, we have the concept of the freedom in religion, according to Pancasila every man and woman in this nation can choose the religion based on their free will and without oppression.

We can conclude that every Indonesian is supposed to behave like what it has been stated in Pancasila by considering the five principles in every daily life.
